Kumihimo braids
A Japanese braiding technique worked on a foam disk. Eight or more strands produce a round braid that no flat knot can match.
Material use
roughly 40 cm per finished centimetre across all strands.
Tying it
- Load the strands into the notches in pairs of colours.
- Move the bottom strand up to the top on one side, then repeat on the other.
- Rotate the disk a quarter turn after each pair.
- Keep a weight on the braid so tension stays constant.
Notes
Colour placement on the disk determines the spiral. Two colours opposite each other give stripes; alternating gives a chevron.
