PPM rope

Polypropylene multifilament rope. Lighter than nylon, it floats, it dries fast and it does not soak up smells.

Against paracord

PPM is stiffer and holds a shape, which is exactly what a lead needs. It also stays lighter when wet, so a lead used near water does not turn into a hanging weight.

The trade-off is grip and feel: nylon is softer in the hand and takes fine knot patterns better.

Diameters

• 6 mm for light leads and smaller dogs
• 8 mm as the general purpose size
• 10 mm for large dogs and for a heavier hand feel
• Flat rope where a wide, soft surface is wanted

Working with it

PPM melts at a lower temperature than nylon, so heat sealing needs a lighter touch. Splices hold well; heavy knot patterns tend to look clumsy in this material.
