Cutting and sealing

Every piece ends with two melted ends, and they are the first thing anyone looks at.

Cutting

A hot knife cuts and seals in one pass and gives the neatest result. Scissors and a lighter work fine, provided the cut is square: an angled cut melts into a point that will not press flat.

Melting

Hold the flame beside the end rather than under it. Nylon that catches fire drips and discolours; nylon that softens can be shaped.

Pressing

Press the softened end flat with a metal surface, not a finger. Melted nylon reaches a temperature that burns skin instantly and sticks while it does it.
