The bracelet jig

A jig holds the piece at a fixed length under constant tension. Everything else it does follows from that.

set length, measured between the pinsadjustable jig with pin holes at fixed spacing
Pins at fixed spacing; the length is measured between them.

What it fixes

Two problems. The finished length no longer drifts, because the distance between the pins is set before the first knot. And the tension stays the same from the first knot to the last, which is what makes a braid look machine made rather than handmade.

Setting the length

Set the pins to the finished length minus the buckle. Attach the buckle halves to the pins, not the cord, so the piece is built at exactly the length it will be worn at.

Improvised versions

A board with two screws works. So does a clipboard with a clamp at each end. The commercial versions add fine adjustment and a stand, which matters if many pieces are made in one session.
